Dec 19, 2003 Dr. Erlin Fu completed his 6-month visit at CARES and returned to China. Dr. Erlin Fu is an associate professor of economics at the Administration Institute of Guangdong Province, China. During his visit, Dr. Fu worked with Dr. Tony Prato on research projects related to sustainable development, regional economics and agricultural economics.

Dec 19, 2003 Congratulations to Jim Meyer, who moved on to St. Louis to start his new marriage and pursue a new career. Jim started working at CARES in February 1997.

Dec 4-6, 2003 Tony Prato was invited to serve on a review team to review the Rural Geospatial Innovations (RGIS) research program on December 4-6, 2003 in Albuquerque, NM.

The review was requested by the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). RGIS is a special research grant authorized through the Federal Administration Program.

Dec 1, 2003 Jim Meyer has been promoted to Senior Geographic Information Systems Specialist. His new title became effective on December 1, 2003.

Jim has been working at CARES since February 1997. He has managed and participated in a number of research projects over the years.

Nov 24-25, 2003 Craig Callison, Michael Hardy and Dan Zerr attended a two-day course "Introduction to ArcGIS 8.2" on Nov 24-25, 2003. The course was offered by the Spatial Data Analysis Laboratory at the MU's School of Natural Resources.  It was held at Room 109 of the Anheuser-Busch Natural Resources Building, UMC campus.

Nov 2-6, 2003 Bryan Mayhan attended and presented at the 2003 Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) Annual Meeting in Denver, CO on 11/2/2003 - 11/6/2003. Bryan presented a paper titled "Soil Survey: Changing the Mapping Paradigm" and a poster "An Internet Map Server Based Pedon Data Entry, Storage and Retrieval System" at the conference.

It was a joint annual meeting with American Society of Agronomy and Crop Science Society of America. This year's theme is: "Changing Sciences for a Changing World: Building a Broader Vision."

Oct 28, 2003 Scott Burton and Arin Stark attended "Introduction to ASP Using VBScript" training class on Oct 28, 2003. The class is the first of the Active Server Pages (ASP) programming training series offered by the Microcomputer Program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Oct 15, 2003 CARES hosted the Mid-Missouri GIS Users Group (MMGUG) meeting on 10/15/2003. A number of CARES staff will showcase their projects during the meeting. The meeting was held in Room 217 at Mumford Hall, MU campus.

The Mid Missouri GIS User Group (MMGUG) is a non-for-profit group of GIS professionals in the Mid-Missouri region. MMGUG holds bi-monthly meetings that devote roughly an hour to discussions and an hour to demonstrations by the hosting organization.

Oct 11-15, 2003 Chris Barnett and Yan Barnett attended the 41th Annual URISA Conference held in Atlanta, GA on 10/11/2003 - 10/15/2003.

Chris and Yan gave an oral presentation on "Community Decision Support Using Internet-Based GIS" and a project showcase presentation on "Use Data Visualization to Illustrate Change of Pattern in Missouri".

Oct 6-9, 2003 Erin Wilson attended the 18th Annual Conference of the Association of State Drinking Water Administration held in Boston, MA on October 6-9, 2003. Erin and Don Scott of Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) co-presented "Using Source Water Assessments to Encourage Protection".

The Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 required states to complete source water assessment to better protect public drinking water from contamination. CARES has assisted MoDNR in completing the assessment in Missouri through the Source Water Inventory Project. This conference provided the opportunity to learn about the implementation issues from other states, and present our findings and results.

Sep 30, 2003 Erin Wilson received a Staff Development Award from the CAFNR Staff Council. The award provides $800 in support of Erin's trip to the 18th Annual Conference of the Association of State Drinking Water Administration held in Boston, MA on October 6-9, 2003.

All non-academic full-time staff are eligible to apply for the Staff Development Award for up to $1,000. The Award is intended principally to assist in personal and professional development of individual(s) through funding for conferences, workshops, short courses, or other appropriate short-term experiences.

Sep 13, 2003 Chris Barnett and Bryan Mayhan were the presenters at the Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Seminar at the Department of Civil and Engineering on 9/13/2003. Chris and Bryan presented "The Missouri Map Room: Utilizing GIS through the Internet".

CARES's Missouri Map Room, Missouri's premier Internet-based GIS, offers computer users with a web browser and access to the Internet the opportunity to map, query, perform analysis, link to other web sites, and print maps of any location in Missouri using hundreds of Missouri's most current GIS layers. This presentation demonstrated some of the many capabilities of the Missouri Map Room.

August, 2003 The Upper and Middle Mississippi Valley Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (UMMV CESU) launches its website. The website provides information about UMMV CESU mission, partners, projects and links to related resources.

The website is hosted and maintained by CARES. Dr. Tony Prato, co-director of CARES, is the director for UMMC CESU.

Aug 6, 2003 Six CARES staff - Chris Barnett, Yan Barnett, Ellen Ehrhardt, Jim Meyer, Manoj Pavuluri, and Erin Wilson - attended a seminar "Dynamic Visual Analysis for the Enterprise", held in St. Louis, MO on Aug 6. The seminar was a complimentary briefing hosted jointly by Information Builders and ESRI.

The representatives from Information Builders introduced WebFocus 5, a software that allows for integration with ESRI's ArcIMS environment to deliver formatted reports, charts and etc. The representatives from ESRI presented ArcGIS and ArcIMS capabilities.

July, 2003 Dr. Erlin Fu, associate professor of economics at the Administration Institute of Guangdong Province, China is a visiting scholar at CARES. Dr. Fu will be working with Dr. Tony Prato on research projects related to sustainable development, regional economics and agricultural economics. Dr. Fu's visit is sponsored by his home institute in China, and he will be with us until January, 2004.

Dr. Fu earned his PhD in ecological economics from Southwest Agricultural University in China. He has been an associate professor at the Administration Institute of Guangdong Province, China since 1997. Prior to coming to CARES, Dr. Fu was a visiting scholar at the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, University of Vermont.

Jul 27-30, 2003 Tony Prato attended the 2003 Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) Annual Conference in Spokane, WA on July 27-30. The conference's theme was “The Columbia, Conserving a Legacy of Life”. It focused on conserving natural resources locally and globally.

Jul 22-25, 2003 Chris Barnett gave four workshops on "Internet Mapping Tools for Missouri" at CAFNR Crop Injury Clinic on July 22-25. The clinic was two two-day sessions focusing on new technologies, weather forecasting, soil mapping and alfalfa management. Chris taught on how to utilize CARES map room for data and map needs.

The Crop Injury Clinic was sponsored by CAFNR Agricultural Experiment Station, and was held at Bradford Research Farm, Columbia, MO.

Jul 7-11, 2003 Michael Barbaro, Richard Charrier and Erin Wilson attended and presented at the 23rd Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, CA on July 7-11. Michael and Richard presented 2 posters on Missouri Hypsography data development project, co-authored with Michael Hardy and Scott Burton. Erin presented a poster on Source Water Inventory Project (SWIP). A poster on data visualization prepared by Yan Barnet, Dave Connett and Dan Zerr was also taken to the Map Gallery exhibition at the conference.

Tony Prato and Dan Zerr attended the 2003 Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units (CESU) National Network Meeting in Washington, D.C. on June 24-25. Over 160 university members, federal agency personnel, and others registered to attend the two-day event. Representatives from CESU-member universities and other CESU partners spoke on a wide variety of CESU-related issues, along with members of the CESU Council.

Jun 1-4, 2003 Tony Prato, Dan Zerr and Dave Connett attended 7th Annual Missouri River Natural Resources Conference at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, June 1-4, 2003.

Tony participated in a panel discussion on Adaptive Management for the Missouri River, representing the Missouri River Institute at MU. Other panel members were representatives from US Fish & Wildlife, US Army Corps of Engineers, Missouri River Basin Association, Missouri River Natural Resources Committee, and USGS. During the conference, Tony, Dan and Dave took field trips to the Benedictine Bottoms and Ft. Leavenworth's bottomland forest.

May 29, 2003 Dr. Jim Coleman, the new vice provost for research at MU, visited CARES on May 29. During the hour-long visit, Dr. Coleman met with staff and toured facilities at CARES.

Dr. Coleman, the former vice president for research and business development of the Desert Research Institute in Nevada, was named vice provost for research at the University of Missouri - Columbia in fall 2002. He began serving as vice provost this spring.

May 29, 2003 Bryan Mayhan attended the 2003 Missouri Cooperative Soil Survey Work Planning Conference on May 29, hosted by MU's Bradford Farm. Bryan and Dr. Fred Young co-presented “Data for the Future: The Missouri Soil Characterization Laboratory On-line Database” at the conference.

The Missouri Soil Characterization Laboratory On-line Database is part of the Soil Map Digitization Project that has been ongoing at CARES since 1995. It is accessible through the Missouri Cooperative Soil Survey Website, housed and maintained by CARES.

May 28, 2003 Randy Asbury presented a seminar on "The Missouri River: Balancing the Equation", co-sponsored by CARES and MRI. The seminar was held at 3:00pm on May 28 in Memorial Union N201 – Mark Twain Room.

Randy Asbury, Executive Director of the Coalition to Protect the Missouri River, presented information representing the diverse interests of agricultural, navigational, industrial, utility, and business-related entities relating to management of the Missouri River. Mr. Asbury previously held the position of Deputy Director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture and was state party nominee for the 19th District Missouri Senate, home renovator, and farmer.

Apr 28, 2003 The Upper and Middle Mississippi Valley Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (UMMV CESU) has been approved by the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) Council. For more information about CESU, contact Tony Prato or visit the CESU website.

The University of Missouri-Columbia will serve as host institution for UMMV CESU. University partners include University of Minnesota, Iowa State University, University of Iowa, Drake University (Iowa), University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, Indiana University, University of Kansas, Lincoln University (Missouri), Southwest Missouri State University and University of Missouri-Columbia. Non-university partners include Audubon-Upper Mississippi River Campaign, Audubon Missouri, Conservation Federation of Missouri, Missouri Botanical Garden, Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. Federal participating agencies are the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and United States Geological Survey-Biological Resources Division.

Apr 23, 2003 Chris Barnett presented Missouri Unified Watershed Assessment project methodology and findings to Missouri Clean Water Commission on April 23, 2003. The project prioritized Missouri's 8-digit hydrologic units. Currently, CARES is completing the prioritization of the 14-digit hydrologic units through The Missouri Watershed Inventory and Assessment Project.

Apr 18, 2003 Chris Barnett presented CARES/CESU activities to EPA Region 7 Administrator on April 18, 2003. The presentation was part of the CAFNR's Luncheon with EPA Region 7 Administrator program. A number of CAFNR researchers presented their research projects on environmental related issues.

Jan 1, 2003 Chris Barnett became a Co-Director of CARES on January 1, 2003. Chris Barnett was the Associate Director of CARES from 1999 to 2002, and Assistant Director from 1997 to 1999. He will be sharing the leadership and management responsibilities with Tony Prato.

Former Co-Director Chris Fulcher resigned from the position to focus on his other involvements.
