Chris Barnett gave a half-day workshop on "Internet Mapping Tools for
Missouri: Information for the Farm" to extension field personnel and
farmers. The objectives of the workshop was to help the participants
understand the basic concepts of GIS and internet mapping, become
familiar with the resources available in the CARES Map Room, and use
internet mapping to understand potential environmental risks. The
workshop was sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension Office
in Henry County, Missouri. It was held in Clinton, Missouri. |

Annual Education Conference on October 7, 2004. Chris demonstrated
utilizing CARES Map Room as a resource for addressing environmental
health related issues. He also presented the

Christopher Fulcher recently made a paper presentation at the Medinfo
conference in San Francisco. Medinfo is the premier triennial
international meeting for the medical informatics community. Held
every three years since 1974, the San Francisco meeting is the first
time that Medinfo has returned to the United States since 1986.

A group of
visitors from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan toured CARES facilities and attended project
presentations on September 2, 2004. The visitors were the participants
of the Central Asian Program, hosted by Dr. Jeanne Schwaller and her
company, International Consulting and Business Training.
The visitors' background ranged from
the head of Ministry of Agriculture department to private farmer. The
participants were here to learn about U.S. agriculture and related
research at the University of Missouri. They have a strong interest
in learning more about Geographic Information Systems (GIS). |

2004 National Library of Medicine (NLM) Informatics Training
Conference in Indianapolis, IN on June 9-10, 2004. Chris's
presentation is based on comparative analysis of national
Behavioral
Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data by Chris Fulcher,
Fungai Chanetsa, Yan Barnett and Chris Barnett. Chris is currently a
fellow of National Library of Medicine, housed at the Department of
Health Management and Informatics at the University of Missouri. |

Mr. Alan Anderson, a technical representative for the Department of
Defense to the Upper and Middle Mississippi Valley Cooperative
Ecosystem Studies Unit (UMMV CESU), visited MU campus and gave a
presentation on research activities at the U.S. Army
Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). The University of
Missouri is the host for the UMMV CESU. The Department of Defense
recently joined the UMMV CESU as a federal partner. |

the 2004-2005 academic year. Dr. Prato will spend majority of the
leave in Montana collaborating on a research project with

Erin Wilson helped with a workshop at the
America's Service Commissions (ASC)
Annual Conference on June 3-4 in Kansas City, MO. ASC is a nonprofit
organization representing state service commissions across the United
States. CARES staff has worked with
RUPRI's Community Information Resources Center (CIRC) to develop a
mapping tool for visualizing the spatial distribution of ASC's
AmeriCorps programs and participants. Erin assisted CIRC personnel
to demonstrate the functionalities of the mapping tool at the ASC
conference. |

conference dedicated to the environment of the Missouri River. CARES

Prato attended and presented at the Centennial Meeting of
American Association of Geographers
in Philadelphia, March 14-19, 2004. Tony's presentation was titled "Modeling
Ecological Economic Impacts of Landscape Change in Mountain Ecosystems".
He presented an ecosystem landscape modeling system that evaluates
the ecological and economic impacts of landscape change in mountain
ecosystems.The Annual Meeting of the Association of American
Geographers is a professional and scholarly meeting of over 4000
attendees. Nearly 3000 attendees present their research in over 700
sessions scheduled throughout the meeting. |

Dr. Gamini Herath, a senior lecturer in Economics at the

to June. Dr Herath teaches micro and macro economics, market research,
and finance. He also coordinates seminars, is a member of the research
committee, and is acting deputy head. His areas of research are:
natural resource economics, liberalization and infrastructure in
developing countries, role of institutions, MCDA. While he is here,
Dr. Herath will be located in Room 213D Mumford Hall. He can be

Chris Fulcher and Yan Barnett attended the
21st Annual Behavioral
Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Conference in Scottsdale,
Arizona on Feb 9-12, 2004. The conference is organized by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).BRFSS is a telephone
survey that tracks health risks in the United States. It was
established by CDC in 1984. The
Division of Behavioral &
Minority Research at the
Center for Health Care Quality, School of Medicine, University of
Missouri - Columbia is responsible for conducting the telephone survey
for Missouri. The Division also conducts research using the BRFSS
data.
CARES has been in collaboration with the Division of Behavioral &
Minority Research in integrating the demographic and health service
indicators with national BRFSS data. Chris and Yan presented the
analysis results through an exhibition booth at the conference. |

Bryan Mayhan presented "Using Web-based GIS: the Missouri Map Room"
at the Missouri Small Outflows Conference in Columbia, MO, on
Wednesday, January 21, in two breakout sessions.
The attendance was estimated at approximately 200 people from
government and private sectors. Engineers, soil scientists,
contractors and installers with widely varying spatial analysis skills
were all represented in the audience. |

As part of the
Source
Water Inventory Project (SWIP), CARES has completed the
creation, printing and delivery of over 50,000 maps and data sheets
for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR).CARES
was charged with creating four hard copies of maps and data sheets
for each of the public water supply systems in the state. These maps
and data sheets can also be viewed online at the
SWIP Maps
website. Although the bulk of the SWIP project is now complete,
CARES will continue to work with MoDNR to update the data and make
it available on the internet. |

Fulcher resumed CARES co-director role starting on January 1,
2004. Chris will co-direct CARES together with Tony Prato and Chris
Barnett. Three directors will focus on different aspects of
management and research areas.Chris Fulcher was a co-director of
CARES prior to January 1, 2003. He took a leave from CARES last
year to focus on the responsibilities as director of
RUPRI Community
Informatics Resource Center (CIRC), an Assistant Professor in
Truman School of Public
Administration and a National Library of Medicine (NLM) Fellow
at the Department of Health
Management and Informatics.
In addition to the CARES Co-Director role, Chris will continue to
complete his NLM fellowship and fulfill his teaching
responsibilities at Truman School. |
