Nov 29-Dec 3, 2005 Bryan Mayhan met with NRCS personnel in Temple, Texas to discuss the database structure for completing a stand-alone soil pedon description system and to develop plans to expand the Missouri Pedon system to Texas. The NRCS personnel included leaders of the NRCS WEB Soil Survey, the Texas State Soil Scientist and Texas Major Land Resource Area Leaders, and National Geospatial Data Center personnel.

The meeting was a follow-up to "Soil Business Requirements for Pedon Coding" that were established at the 2005 National Cooperative Soil Survey Conference held May 21-26, 2005 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Nov 28, 2005 Bryan Mayhan co-conducted a workshop with MDNR soil scientist Wyn Kelley on the new soil survey products and accessing those data on the CARES and Missouri Cooperative Soil Survey Websites. The workshop was held at the Tan-Tar-A Resort, Missouri. The presentation is available from the Missouri Cooperative Soil Survey website.

Nov 7, 2005 Kristopher Dolle joins CARES as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist. Kris has been a GIS Specialist at the Office of Space Planning and Management, University of Missouri since September 2003.

Kris received a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism in 2001, and a Master of Arts in Public Administration in 2005 from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Welcome, Kris!

Nov 6-10, 2005 Bryan Mayhan traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah, to attend the annual ASA-CSA-SSSA meetings on November 6-10. He attended sessions and symposia that included soil genesis and morphology, soil conservation, cropping systems, Internet-based soil information delivery, as well as met with NRCS personnel regarding soil data delivery developments at CARES and integrating those developments into the national framework.

Prior to joining CARES, Garry was a GIS Assistant at the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).  Garry holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Geography and History from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Nov 4, 2005 Dr. Yang Boo Choe, Korean Ambassador to Argentina, visits CARES and other research facilities in the Division of Applied Social Sciences (DASS) at University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Choe delivered a special international lecture on "Agricultural Imagination and New Challenges for Scientists in the 21st Century" on November 3, 2005. A reception will be held to honor Dr. Choe in 217 Mumford Hall on November 4, 2005.

Dr. Choe received his PhD degree from the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri in 1977. Dr. Yang Boo Choe has had a number of important responsibilities in Korea. He is currently the Korean Ambassador to Argentina.

Oct 19, 2005 A new General Soil Map of Missouri was published by CARES, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) and US Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). CARES staff Michael Hardy and Bryan Mayhan are among the key authors of the map.

This marks the first update of the map since the mid-1970's. The 28"x40" map is available free of charge through the NRCS state office or at regional MoDNR and NRCS soil survey offices.

Funding for the map was provided by the State Soil and Parks Sales Tax. It is provided as tool to promote soil conservation through education about Missouri's most vital resource.

A printable 28"x40" PDF file of the General Soil Map of Missouri (44MB) is available for download from CARES website.

Sep 13-15, 2005 Bryan Mayhan will exhibit CARES Internet Mapping Tools at the West North Central Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) regional conference in Hannibal, MO. The conference is held on September 13 through 15, 2005. The theme of this year's conference is "It's The Water Workshop".

The SWCS's West North Central chapter consists of 5 states in Mid-America region: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Sep 7-8, 2005 Bryan Mayhan participated with Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MNDR) soil scientists in a field mapping exercise at the University of Missouri Agroforestry Center in New Franklin, MO on September 7 and 8. The exercise was part of research into hardwood tree species flood survival traits. Soil characterization is needed to understand the local environmental variability found within the 20 acre study area.

Aug 17, 2005 Dr. Keun Seop Shim of the Korean Rural Development Administration (RDA) starts his visit at CARES until October 30, 2005. During his stay, Dr. Shim will work with CARES researchers on the joint project: “Application of Information Technology and its Effects in Agriculture”.

Dr. Shim's office is located at Room 224, Mumford Hall, MU Campus.

Jul 25-29, 2005 ESRI International User ConferenceChris Barnett and Yan Barnett attend and present at the 25th Annual ESRI Users Conference from July 25th to 29th in San Diego, CA.

Chris will showcase the internet-based Missouri Animal Feeding Operation (AFO) Site Evaluation Report tool. Yan will participate the conference's Map Gallery event presenting a poster on disAbility Spin website.

Jul 18, 2005 Chris Barnett presented CARES projects and activities at the Missouri Agricultural Land Management Resource Institute (MALMRI) Directors' summer meeting in Jefferson City, MO. Other presenters at the meeting included Directors of MO Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR), Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP), Missouri Spatial Data Information Services (MSDIS) and Missouri Watershed Information Network (MOWIN).

MALMRI consists of representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Farm Services Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Missouri Outreach and Extension, and College of Agriculture, Foods and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri.

Jul 5, 2005 Tim Morris comes on board as CARES's new Administrative Associate. Tim comes to us from the Assessment Resource Center (ARC) at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Tim held Administrative Assistant and other positions at ARC for the past 8 years, managing several project accounts. Tim brings with him much needed fiscal management knowledge and experience. Jun 30, 2005 Dr. Chris Fulcher successfully completed two-year National Library of Medicine Post-Doctoral Informatics Research Fellowship with distinction. The fellowship was hosted by the Department of Health Management and Informatics (HMI) at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Dr. Fulcher started his fellowship on May 1, 2003.

Jun 1, 2005 Michael Barbaro has been promoted to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist effective on June 1, 2005. Michael joined CARES as a GIS Technician in July, 2001. He was an integral part of the Missouri Hypsography Work-Share Agreement project team. Currently, Michael manages the Lincoln Home National Historic Site Photo Archive Project.

May 21-26, 2005 Bryan Mayhan presented at the 2005 National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) National Conference held on May 21-26, 2005 in Corpus Christi, Texas. His presentations were titled "Overview of the Missouri Cooperative Soil Survey Website" and "WEB Soil Survey Recommendations Report". Bryan also served on the New Technology Committee and the WEB Soil Survey Committee.

The conference is organized by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), US Department of Agriculture. The purpose of this bi-annual conference is to review progress recommended during the previous conferences, recommend new programs or work methodologies regarding soil survey and associated programs. About 140 participants attended this year's conference from various federal agencies (mainly NRCS, BLM, BIA, USFS), universities and states.

Mar 24, 2005 Dr. Tony Prato and Dan Fagre of USGS Science Center in Montana have a new book on "National Parks and Protected Areas". From decision-making for planning and management to the principles of ecology and economics, this text examines the analytical methods, information technologies, and planning and management problems associated with protected area planning and management. Protected area managers and students in undergraduate and graduate courses in natural resource management will appreciate this highly readable book.

Mar 23, 2005 Dr. Tony Prato presented on Adaptive Management of Protected Areas for Climate Change at the MTNCLIM 2005 conference held March 1-4, 2005 in Chico Hot Springs, Pray, Montana. This new biennial research conference is dedicated to mountain climate sciences and effects of climate variability on ecosystems, natural resources, and conservation in western North American mountains. The conference is sponsored by the Consortium for Integrated Climate Research in Western Mountains. Copies of the presentations made at the conference are available on the website.

Mar 24-29, 2005 Dr. Weon Sik Han and Dr. Keun Seop Shim of the Korean Rural Development Administration (RDA) visit CARES from March 24 to March 29, 2005. The purpose of this visit is to discuss the joint international research project between RDA and CARES: “Application of Information Technology and its Effects in Agriculture”.

Mar 10-11, 2005 Chris Barnett and Yan Barnett visited NRCS's Information Technology Center (ITC) in Fort Collins, CO to discuss possible national data access. ITC is responsible for providing the information technology infrastructure and application information systems to support the delivery of NRCS programs and services. Chris, Yan and Dr. John Lory, a MU Extension professor, met with several ITC project managers and architecture specialists to discuss about the possible access to NRCS's national SSURGO II, conservation planning, and DOQQ databases.

Feb 21, 2005 Chris Barnett and Bryan Mayhan will attend the 9th Annual Missouri GIS conference. Chris will present at an ArcSDE session.

The conference will be held on February 21-23 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri. The conference will be the ninth for Missouri users of geographic information technologies.

Feb 15, 2005 Dr. Tony Prato attended Glacier Institute’s field trip to Kintla Lake in Glacier National Park in Montana. Kintla Lake is located in North Fork valley in Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park in northwest Montana. The North Fork valley is one of the wildest places in the lower 48 states. It has all of the original (pre-settlement) carnivores and other species.

During the three-day field trip, the participants observed live animals and habitat including deer, elk, pygmy owl, pine marten, bald eagle, beaver dam, and captive wolf. They also found tracks for wolf, moose, deer, elk, cougar (mountain lion), pine marten, coyote, Canada lynx, snowshoe hare, and red fox.

Feb 2, 2005 Chris Barnett was invited to give a half-day workshop to MO Chapter of American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) on CARES internet mapping tools. A total of 28 farm managers and appraisers attended the workshop.

The objective of the workshop was to get the participants become acquainted with the CARES Map Room - an internet mapping website. The workshop provided background concepts, training on website tools, hands-on experience, conceptual application of technology as it relates to real estate appraisal. Specifically, map construction, defining demographic data for a region, understanding GIS and Internet mapping, and appraisal application of the Environmental applications (BERM/AFO sites) available from the CARES Map Room.

Jan 31, 2005 Deborah Ratliff joins CARES as our new Administrative Associate. Deborah brings with her many years of experiences in coordinating center activities. Before joining CARES, Deborah was an Executive Staff Assistant to the Director of Biomedical and Health Informatics Training Program at the Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri - Columbia.

Jan 18, 2005 Dr. Dong-Phil Lee of Korea Rural Economic Institute starts his year-long visit at CARES. Dr. Lee is a former graduate student of the Department of Agricultural Economic at the University of Missouri. He is currently a Research Director at the Rural Economic Institute in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Lee is taking a year-long sabbatical leave from his home institute to focus on his research. He is housed in Room 138A, Mumford Hall during his stay at the University of Missouri - Columbia.
