CARES Engagement Network

The Engagement Network is a national platform where you can find public and custom tools produced by the Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems (CARES) at the University of Missouri. The Engagement Network hosts:

– A national Map Room with 15,000+ data layers
– The premier Community Health Needs Assessment reporting tool with 80+ health-related indicators
– A Hub Network with 30+ partner organizations using CARES technology

You may have seen these data, tools, and Hubs in Community Commons in the past. Community Commons is transitioning to a new platform and the Engagement Network has been created to ensure that communities, organizations, and agencies that rely on free access to the maps and tools can continue to get reliable data and visualization tools.

Our CHNA Tool:

The Engagement Network’s Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Report platform was launched July 2, 2018 by the University of Missouri Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems (CARES). The platform provides key data for identifying and prioritizing health needs in counties and local communities across the United States. The goal of the reporting platform is to provide open access to public health data and communication materials to increase public understanding of community health and health disparities, and to improve the efficiency of health data collection.

Our Approach:

The platform provides a combination of community contextual information and crucial disease surveillance information in the realms of: demographics; social &economic factors (income, education); physical environment (air, climate, infrastructure); clinical care (access, utilization); health behaviors (alcohol, tobacco, nutrition); and health outcomes (disease, mortality). The platform includes visualizations of metrics by population group (race, ethnicity, gender) and geography, enabling identification of vulnerable populations and health disparities. Indicators are obtained from multiple sources and are updated as new data are released. The Engagement Network CHNA report improves upon the highly utilized Community Commons CHNA Report. New developments include an improved navigation system, the Quick Facts report – a tabular version of the full report that can be downloaded to excel – and the ability to share interactive maps and reports through email or social media.

The Engagement Network CHNA report is a valuable tool that can be utilized across sectors, removing barriers for assessing, monitoring, and evaluating the many aspects of community health.
